Where would our economy be without gift-giving
holidays? (JY)
Holidays serve to make consumption "spiky"
around certain defined, shared times of the year to give gifts, rather
than smooth throughout the year. But do they make overall consumption
higher? Would we give as much throughout the year naturally if holidays
did not exist and we were not told when to give?
