Whether in your travels or close to home, if you met someone you wanted to get a better understanding of but could only ask them one question, what would it be?

This was the most difficult question for me to answer.

And I'm still not sure if I have an answer.

It can't be a "pick-up line"; it would have to be something from the heart, something that would cut into that person's soul, to understand who they are, what they believed in, what I could learn from them, how I could help them.

And given the incredible variety of people and the need to understand each person on their own terms, could there really be a single answer?

Perhaps I wouldn't even ask a question; maybe I would just listen.

My "question" would be silence.
