Markers of the shared experiences
Blazes, signs and cairns provided a reminder of our
progress on the route, reinforcing the work that others have done to
blaze this trail for us, reminding us that we share the Way with all
others that have hiked the route before.
The signs provided an interesting extra depth to the
hike by giving background on the lands we passed through. Numerous signs
provided historical details on a variety of subjects, giving us an idea
of the changes that the land and its people have encountered throughout
time. Especially in the Highlands, imagining the battles fought among
the Clans and between the Clans and the English brought a sobering reality
to how other people experienced hiking this same route very differently.
