iPhone whatever. Enough is enough. Is a $600 slickly-designed device with a gorgeously fluid user interface and a cool image the key to happiness? Will we be happy and special by being life everyone else?
- Best summary of the coverage.
- Cingular gets a two-year exclusive in the US. Meaning, no iPhone for T-mobile until 2009. And until some fundamental technology change, never for Verizon or Sprint.
- Why is the iPhone voicemail such a big deal? Because Apple was able to get Cingular to make significant investments and changes in their underlying IT to make it possible, a rarity in wireless operator & handset manufacturer relationships. A model for the future, I hope.
- What is going to happen with the iPhone in Europe? Looks like Telefonica is the early leader, which means that in the UK O2 would be the first to launch. And Asia?
- How does this impact other handset manufacturers trying to sell smartphones? There will always be a place for other smartphones with different feature sets at different price points, but it puts more pressure on RIM, Nokia and Samsung in their efforts to expand their market share in the higher-priced handsets, in both the consumer and business markets. Honestly, this makes Palm seem dated.
- “Coincidentally” timed with the iPhone launch, the rebranding of Cingular *back* to AT&T.
- Who will we blame when we can’t hear people talk? Apple or Cingular?
