Snippets of what I found on the web last week…

  • Noah Brier, I Heard About That
  • Chris Timmerman, Brand Avenue, Mixed-Use Suburbs and Allison Arieff, New York Times, What will save the suburbs.

I’ve been fascinated with urban and suburban design for many years; the future of the suburbs has been sitting on my mind ever since the pop of the housing bubble. Times of upheaval are fitting times to re-think the role the landscape of our lives plays on our lives.

  • Speaking of which, a fitting time to revisit an old collaborative project; Grace Lam in Neighborhoods:

Neighborhoods vary around the world, yet it seems that no matter how physically different they may be, they become emotional spaces where one feels “at home.” A neighborhood exists beyond the houses to the people and environment that hold special meanings to the inhabitants. Still, we often fail to recognize the beauty close to home since we live and breathe it every day. So here’s to taking a step back, and seeing your neighborhood and those in the world community in a different light: as places where one can be comforted in the familiar, and yet easily in awe of the beauty in the ordinary.

  • Iain Tait, How to ‘Do The Internet’ with Little Boots and Imogen Heap:

Their videos have got music and talent at the core, but the edges are the bits that give you personality, quirkiness and ultimately likability.

  • Brooks Jordan, Say it Hot.
  • Kathryn O’Shea-Evans, GOOD Magazine, The Anti-Consumers: The Amish, No Impact Man, The Church of Stop Shopping, Freegans and The Compact.
  • Kari, Why I blog about Africa:

I blog about Africa because I was raised by one of her tribes. And because here things that are ragged are patched and cherished. Because sub Saharan thunderstorms are so deafening you have to believe in heaven. And mostly I blog about Africa because I want you to come, and fall in love.

  • Virginia Gardiner, New York Times, 24 Rooms Tucked Into One.
  • Erica Johansson of Travel Blissful guest posting on Almost Fearless about Facing Your Fears.
  • And yep, you’ve heard about this already, but I’ll mention it anyway: Ben Terrett, All the ephemera that’s fit to print *
