Within The Frame, David duChemin

David duChemin was kind enough to pass me a copy of his new book “Within The Frame”, and it’s one of those books that reminds me how complacent I’ve become with my own photography and how little I know about many key parts of the craft.

That’s not easy to say, but it’s how I’ve felt lately.

Even though David outlines many practical tips, it’s not a “how-to” book, but instead a “why-to” book, aiming to help us find our vision and approach photography with a thoughtful, emotional and playful perspective; but most importantly, it’s about heart. David’s passion for connecting with people beyond the image shines through his blog and book, and his willingness to share his heart and personal feelings about photography is why I’ve read his blog for years.

I’ll point out a couple particular passages in a couple later posts, but I wanted to first focus on a couple examples of how David is building on his ability to connect with people to promote “Within The Frame”:

Trust me, there are lessons there…

Thanks for the link to his PDF sample. Recently finished reading it; makes me want to buy the whole book. I especially liked what he wrote about finding a meaning in every photo and looking for photographs that contain contrasting subjects.

    Plus this quote.
“A great storyteller doesn’t tell absolutely everything. She tells enough to make you care, to tell the story and move the plot, and no more.” I've read similar quotes before but never realized it can/should be applied to photography as well.

I really like your new design by the way.
  • His book is full of quotes like that; one of David's main points on his blog is "Gear is Good, Vision is Better", and his focus on connecting to yourself, to subjects, to places, to viewers, and to something deeper behind the image is something for all of us to remember.

    (and thanks!)
  • Hi Taylor,

I work for Peachpit Press and thought you and your readers would like to know that David Duchemin has a special podcast series in the works where he gives his own personal feedback to YOUR photos. You can submit them through flickr and, if chosen, he'll let you know what he thinks! More info can be found here:
